PASSPORT REMINDER:  Effective June 1, 2009, a passport is required for re-entry into the U.S, even for U.S. citizens.  Passports are very easy to obtain now (lenghty processing delays no longer exist) and are good for 10 years.  Learn more at the U.S. Department of State website.

The picturesque Baja coast is just minutes south of San Diego, but worlds apart.  The drive from San Diego to Bajamar is quite easy and very well marked - a four lane toll highway winds along the spectacular coastline from just south of Tijuana all the way to Ensenada.  The Bajamar main entrance is just off the toll road, about 40 minutes south of Tijuana and 20 minutes north of Ensenada.

If you drive your own vehicle, you can purchase insurance coverage for Mexico at several locations near the border.  Oscar Padilla, one of the angencies near the border, also allows insurance purchases online.

Avis, Hertz and Enterprise allow you to take cars into Mexico, and will provide you with Mexico liability insurance when you pick up the car at Lindbergh Field in San Diego.  Other car rental companies may as well (be sure to check when you make your reservation), but we've found the Avis/Hertz process to be the smoothest.  The rental agencies may require you to purchase insurance from them, and not through the border agencies - be sure to check before purchasing a side policy.  The Avis/Hertz rates are very competitive, and very easy to obtain at the rental counter.
